A family portrait session is more than a photograph—it’s an heirloom in the making. At Life in Portraits, I know that preparing for your session can feel both exciting and overwhelming. My goal is to ensure that your experience is effortless, enjoyable, and memorable, so you can focus on what matters most: being present with the people you love.
Here are a few ways to set your family up for success:
Coordinated clothing elevates your portraits, but comfort is equally important. Children especially shine when they can move, play, and relax in their clothing. Soft fabrics, breathable layers, and shoes that fit well make all the difference. Think timeless, neutral tones with subtle accents rather than bold patterns that may distract.
A well-rested child (and parent!) is more relaxed and cooperative during a portrait session. Aim for a schedule that aligns with nap times and ensures little ones aren’t hungry or overtired. When families arrive feeling refreshed, portraits naturally capture joy instead of stress.
A small bag with water, light snacks, and perhaps a favorite toy or blanket can be a lifesaver during your session. Sometimes a simple comfort item is all it takes for a child to feel at ease. For younger children, a small “bribe” like a treat at the end can help them stay engaged and motivated.
The most treasured portraits often come from genuine, unscripted moments. A child’s laugh, a shared glance, or the way your family naturally connects—these are the details that create portraits worth cherishing. Allow for a little spontaneity, and I’ll take care of capturing the magic.
From start to finish, my role is to guide you. Whether it’s directing you into flattering light, helping children feel comfortable, or adjusting the flow of the session, you are never alone in this experience. With a little preparation and trust, your session will feel effortless—and the results will be timeless.
